Pokemon Go Sheds Light On The Loveland Frogmen Mystery

Pokemon Go is a craze that has spread around the world and, I'm sure you Dear Constant Readers will be well aware, my house with amazing speed. Catching monsters out in the wild has never been easier, getting us couch potatoes out the door in search of elusive creatures. And supposedly it has already led to encounters with some of our planet's own "legendaries".

A couple have this month claimed to have encountered and photographed (see link) the Loveland Frogmen (or at least a giant frog) whilst out playing Pokemon Go! Whilst crouched like a frog when they first saw it, it rose to its hind legs before disappearing into the night. The pictures look like a 1970s Doctor Who monster done on an even smaller budget. Sceptical? I may well be. But not as much as I am after what has subsequently happened.

I've written about the Loveland Frogmen before. In that post I quoted an interview with one of the key, claimed, sources for the myth, Mark Matthews, who made it clear he thought it was just a lizard. The latest "encounter" has allowed his version of events to come to the fore again and he made it even plainer that the creature he not only saw but also killed(!) was just a large iguana. His attempts to explain this to those who've set out to investigate the Frogmen have often been outright ignored over the years but, at last, he's getting some much needed exposure.

I love monsters. I really love frogs. And who doesn't love a good mystery? But I think it is safe to say that the Loveland Frogmen are more myth than reality. They make the Pokemon now inhabiting our mobiles seem real by comparison! Happy hunting, monster lovers!

Is It A Giant Swastika On The Moon? No... it's just marketing!

After a bit of debate on Above Top Secret it has been conclusively proven that this picture is NOT actually a Nazi UFO, but instead a picture from a faux news story made to promote Iron Sky.

It truly is amazing that even ONE person would believe such things, but as we've seen; it was much easier to destroy Nazi Germany than it has proven to be able to destroy the Nazi survival myths.

If the Nazi's had made a base on the Moon do you really think they'd market it using a giant swastika???

Romney Marsh Myths and Legends

The Romney Marsh Times has a piece on the myths and legends of Romney Marsh, a place close to my home town (which is very much in my thoughts at the moment as I make plans to return to live there). Check it out!

The Giant Peruvian Snake

In case you've been missing it, the CFZ bloggo has been offering a blow by blow account of a giant snake "discovery" in Peru.

It all started with a story in a newspaper. CFZ picked it up and followed through on it with a rigorous investigation of their own. Turns out it was just a sandbar (quelle surprise). Well probably.

I might be a sympathetic sceptic, but even the more hardcore sceptics should give credit where credits due. CFZ do not just accept any old story, they properly look into the merits of each case. That's why I subscribed to Animals and Men last year and will do so again when I have the money. In the meantime I say check out the Peruvian snake saga, and then explore the rest of the fab articles over there. Anyone with a passing interest in animals, or cryptozoology, will find something of interest on there.

Alien Attack!!!

Aliens are all around us here in the United Kingdom. They walk, fly, slither and grow most any place you can imagine. Some are worried, but most don't seem to care.

Is David Icke's prediction finally becoming accepted fact? No. For we are talking about plain old, but not quite boring, ecological alien invasion.

Take me to your leader!
Copyright Jason Alexander 2005

Grey squirrels and Canada geese are so common and recognisable that they feel almost like natives. But there are other, more unusual creatures, which have also come to call our islands home.

Wallabies. Yes, wallabies, have managed to survive, if not thrive, here in Britain. In this 2006 article there were supposedly 51 sightings of wallabies over the preceding six years. (There were 5,931 sightings of big cats yet wallabies in Britain aren't controversial but big cats are... go figure!).

Once, beyond perhaps an occasional nip by a pike, a Brit could be assured that when stepping into lakes for a dip their digits and dangly bits were in little danger. But no longer as turtles and terrapins have begun to appear all over the place. Reports come from Kent, the Midlands and Cornwall among many other places. My favourite turtle story was of a rather aggressive snapping turtle which had alluded a park keeper for 17 years before finally being caught. Snapping turtles are no joke when they give you a quick "nip".

But could even more dangerous reptilians be stalking the unwary from our ponds, lakes and rivers? Some claim to have seen crocodiles in such places as Swansea, Staffordshire and an alligator in the Midlands. Perhaps we might need to keep an eye on more than just our toes when taking to the water.

Any suggestion that she had been replaced by a crocodilian alien was quickly denied by a spokesman for Her Majesty (pictured) last night

Most of the animals typically reported are obviously headline grabbing but some are slightly more worrying, well for arachnophobics anyway! Check this story for examples of alien spiders in Britain and for another growing trend: the prediction of future alien invasions. These days no story about an alien invasion can be complete without the end warning of the imminent approach of *insert ever more scary species here*.

A Chinese Mitten Crab attempting to take over a Natural England tactical command post

In our rivers foreign crabs and crayfish threaten our flora, fauna and even our river banks! As you can imagine this sends our press into a frenzy of ecological xenophobia. They are so used to this that when an extinct native species is returned, such as the beaver, they are torn between terror and jubilation. It's interesting to watch.

Personally I think it's time we reevaluated the way we deal with invasive species. Many species we consider perfectly acceptable in this country such as hares, rabbits and pheasants are in fact simply successful invaders. Invasion of new territory by more well adapted species is called progress. Yes things will change. Yes species will die. But perhaps we should spend more time worrying about keeping our planet healthy and less about keeping it "genetically pure".

Don't get me wrong, I think efforts to protect the red squirrel, our native crayfish and other species and habitats threatened by invaders are extremely well intentioned and very worthy. But perhaps we should try merely to keep them alive for their beauty and the joy they bring and not just because they are native and other animals aren't. Let's not let humanity's racist thoughts blind our policy towards the environment. A healthy environment free of plastic, toxins and other trash might enable native species to expand back to ranges lost which might ensure a longer term future for them whilst allowing space for change and evolution from the more exotic members of Britains ever changing family of flora and fauna.

Polar Bears: Cute But Not For Cuddles!

Polar bears are the world's largest land carnivore. Males can be up to 3 metres long. The largest male ever recorded weighed a metric tonne! So I think now all understand... going head to head with a polar bear is a bad idea. Nobody surely would be as stupid as to jump into a polar bear enclosure, even if it did contain the world famous Knut?

Yes. Someone really was that stupid.

Funnier attack here!

I Do Love This Blog

Still no laptop, nor internet connection, to truly call my own and whilst I do have time(ish) to write posts I don't have the urge for some reason because it eats into what is now valuable internet time for me to chat with mates and blog on my other two blogs. Posts on here take a lot of reading to get up, and a fair bit of writing, and so things here are closed until I can afford a new laptop.

But... I will be back here, and things will be updated as soon as I get a new laptop... thanks to everyone for keeping me in their readers and following lists. It really is appreciated. This blog gives me an excuse to look into areas that interest me, that I've neglected for a long time, so it is very much forefront in my future plans.

I just love this article on "shadow life" here on Earth. A very interesting area of study. I've always been fascinated by the "vent life" of the seas but this takes things a whole step further...

Titanoboa: The Biggest Snake To Ever Slither The Earth

Titanoboa has been described from newly discovered fossil records in north-east Colombia. It would have lived 58-60 million years ago, was probably 13m (42ft) long and was so wide it could reach up to a persons hips!

Perhaps tales of giant snakes have a basis in reality after all!!

Interesting Squid Video Released

This week National Geographic released a video of a rather interesting squid called a Magnapinna "Big Fin" squid.

This squid is not a newly discovered species although no examples have yet been caught dead, or alive.

Isn't the way it just seems to float there, almost looking directly at the camera, really rather wonderful? Brilliant video.

Haunted Sofa? News (if you could call it that)...

Sometimes I truly am amazed at the guff the news media print in this country. I can almost forgive the Sun, but the fact the Telegraph also went with this story proves that it has gone to the dogs.

Nigel and Christine Strange (cue five million jokes) from Bristol think their leather sofa is haunted because... it makes squeaking noises when they sit on it. The noises appear to be getting louder over time and their "fearless Yorkshire Terrier" is scared by the noises.

1. Anyone ever had a leather sofa? I hate the things, the squeaky noises can be totally irritating.
2. Sofas often BREAK and if something is broken inside it will often make a noise, especially when sat on, and over time the noise might get worse as the problem gets worse.
3. Yorkshire Terriers will bark at anything.

How can anyone take this seriously? It's obviously a set up story to enable the Sun to push it's parent companies latest release "The X-Files: I Want To Believe" (I did too but I was very much off put by the terrible plot). Only an idiot would assume something was haunted just because it squeaked when you sat on it!

And really... it's just a boring story. Unlike these tales of the unexpected (with a furniture twist)

UFO News

Once upon a time there was a boy, let us call him Moonlight, who loved nothing more than a good UFO story. In fact, it wouldn't be going too far if I was to say UFOs were the centre of his interest in the unusual and the paranormal. Then one day he changed and, whilst his interest in zoology allowed his cryptozoological interests to flourish, his declining interest in the X-Files lead his interest in UFOs to reach rock bottom. Eventually he became cynical and rather uncharitable towards those who continued to believe in UFOs. In fact he thought most of them were a little bit bonkers (Louis Theroux's show was the nail in the coffin when he found himself hunting aliens in the desert in the USA with a mind powered gun...)

To be honest I still recoil at stories of UFOs, alien encounters or any other related phenomena as my brain simply refuses to put up with of the craziness. I was listening to a podcast about star children today and found myself wanting to scream out "YOU ARE ALL INSANE" but thought that as I was on a rather crowded train this might not be the best idea...

But I am being somewhat unfair, I'd much rather share a pint with a ufologist than with a fundamentalist Christian (not to say that if a fundamentalist Christian were to offer me a pint I'd say no, I wouldn't... I'd say yes, hint hint hint...)

Anyway... yesterday brought us more news of UFO sightings over the United Kingdom! Woo, I hear you cry! Don't get too excited, this is just old reports finally being released to the public. But they are quite interesting in themselves. Yahoo has a good report on the story, including this about an encounter involving an Italian jet flying over... Lydd, Kent (did you think I'd go four posts in a row without mentioning Kent! As if!)

Documents show the McDonnell Douglas MD80 aircraft was en route from Milan to Heathrow at 22,000ft with 57 people on board when pilot Achille Zaghetti saw the strange object 1,000ft above him.

He recounted: "At once I said, 'look out, look out,' to my co-pilot, who looked out and saw what I had seen.

"As soon as the object crossed us I asked to the ACC (area control centre) operator if he saw something on his screen and he answered 'I see an unknown target 10nm (nautical miles) behind you'."

It goes on:

The files show that Southern TV broadcast a story about a 14-year-old boy who reported seeing a missile flying at low level before climbing through the cloud and disappearing on the same evening.

An unnamed Whitehall official wrote: "It is our intention to treat this sighting like that of any other Unidentified Flying Object and therefore we will not be undertaking any further investigation."

There were a number of other similar incidents recorded in the same year.

On June 17, 1991 four passengers onboard a Dan Air Boeing 737 saw a "wingless projectile" pass beneath the aircraft as it climbed from Gatwick Airport headed for Hamburg.

And on July 15 the pilot of a Britannia Airways 737 reported seeing a "small black lozenge-shaped object" travelling at speed as they approached Gatwick.

Included in the released files are some pictures detailing peoples sightings. One finally explains what is happening with a picture subtly labeled "solar-power geostationary satellite"...

That's no satellite!! That's a Tie-Fighter! No doubt the Emperor's advanced guard. Oh all those fools who labeled themselves Jedi's in all those censuses are going to feel mighty stupid when the purges begin... Ok this is unfair, let's see what the man who submitted this picture in 1986 says...

"I am subjected to mysterious happenings which can only occur with the use of an electromagnetic device," he wrote, enclosing this drawing. "By using high technological equipment I have been deliberately introduced to form of radio communication by which I am able to receive messages.”
Far more sane....

Anyway it is some quite interesting stuff, what are your thoughts on aliens, ufos and the like?

Bad Blogger

My new job, and the commute home, have left me with only a few hours every day to write and, as you can imagine, I just do not feel like it. Now one side affect of leaving one job and starting another is that I'm currently very poor and thus have plenty of time at the weekends to spend writing. So for now I'm just going to do a brief overview of the weird stories that have piqued my interested over the last few days rather than one of my usual stories...

Fish have been filmed at the deepest level yet by a British-Japanese team reports the BBC. They were recorded feeding at a depth of 7.7km, and they seemed none the worse despite the incredible forces being exerted on them at that level. What else might be lurking down there? Another expedition is due to go even deeper in March next year. Can't wait to see what marvels they observe.

Not new, but new to me! Brilliant video of some unusual clouds over Japan.

Here in Britain evolution has given us metal eating worms. Now all we need are some sea borne plastic eating bacteria and things might get a whole lot better for life on this planet.

I bloody spend all year praying for snow, but do I get any? No. Mars on the other hand... oh it gets some. I'm getting jealous of a possibly lifeless planet. Grr...

Update: Millionaire Spooked Out Of Mansion By Bankruptcy?

Last Sunday I mentioned the story of Anwar Rashid, who claimed to have been scared out of his mansion by ghosts.

I expressed some... reservations about this case suspecting that there were more likely to be financial motives rather than supernatural ones behind the move. Lo and behold whilst tracing back a search to this site I found this post at the RichardDawkins.net forum which shows Mr Rashid is going through some rather serious financial difficulties.

Was this ghost story simply a face saving measure so he didn't have to admit his problems? Check out that thread it has a more in depth look at his claims.

News; Millionaire "Spooked Out Of Home"

Anwar Rashid claims to have been forced to stop paying his mortgage after eight months of living with ghosts.

He and his wife Nabila, 25, moved into Clifton Hall - which dates back to the Norman conquest - with their daughters, aged seven, five and three, and 18-month-old son.

Mr Rashid said: "I fell for its beauty but behind the facade it is haunted...

"The ghosts didn't want us to be there and we could not fight them because we couldn't see them."

He said the paranormal experiences began on the day they moved in, ranging from tapping on the wall and unexplained voices to ghostly presences taking the forms of their children.

Mr Rashid added: "When we found red blood spots on the baby's quilt, that was the day my wife said she'd had enough. We didn't even stay that night."

Even paranormal experts were unable to solve the problem.

The family left in August 2007 and Mr Rashid, who now lives in Wollaton, stopped paying the mortgage in January. The Yorkshire Bank finally reclaimed the hall on Thursday.

He said: "When people used to tell me about ghosts, I would never believe them and would say 'whatever'.

"But I would have to tell any new owner that it was haunted having experienced it."

An interesting story but we must remember that we have tough times economically at the moment and it wouldn't be the first time a ghost had been used as a convenient excuse to cut loses.

News: Robbie Williams Is Not The Most Insane Person In The World

Well we've had his "alien encounter" and now comes this little humourous piece of what I hope is just self promotion rather than real full blown insanity.

Robbie Williams could be abducted by aliens and "come back as an ambassador for their race", an expert claims.

The UK pop star, who is known to have become increasingly fascinated with UFOs in recent months, has been warned he is in danger of being taken from Earth.

Michael Luckman, Director of the New York Centre For Extraterrestrial Research, explained: "Robbie is now becoming a point man for contact with extraterrestrials.

"None of the experiences I've seen are in the same category of what Robbie appears to have experienced. Robbie could easily disappear and then come back as an ambassador for their race."

Luckman warned the singer that his attitude to the phenomenon puts him even more in the firing line. "He's unusually pro-active, even putting his musical career on hold.

"And he is more likely to make contact because of where he is spiritually - he takes it to the max", he continued.

I'm glad to see Mr Luckman is keeping some sensible levels of perspective on the matter. Not! "Spiritually". That word says it all.

He also added:

He said: “This is an unprecedented situation, there’s no guidebook. The aliens could be 1,000 times more intelligent, perhaps 100,000 times more intelligent than humans.

They could also be 10 times or even a 100 times more stupid! Why can't people stop talking out of their arse, it seems obvious Mr Luckman is only after publicity for his conspiracy theories of Government cover ups and alien contact.

We at Moonlight Investigation like to keep an open mind but it's people like Mr Luckman that make us particularly dubious when it comes to ufology.

News: Near Death Experiences Researched

A new research project into Near Death experiences is about to begin.

I've always been sceptical of any supernatural element to these experiences due to the cultural bias, if you're a Christian you might see Heaven and Hell but not if you're Buddhist. But I'll try and keep an eye out for this projects report to see what they find out. Interesting stuff.

'Voodoo-cursed' woman is jailed

A lady involved in benefit fraud claimed to have been forced into crime due to a "voodoo curse" placed on her family. What on Earth was she thinking? That sort of claim is never going to go down well with our court system, especially as they probably haven't much idea what Voodoo is beyond what they've seen in Bond movies. She even produced human fingers (of an as yet unidentified origin) to back up her case. Thankfully they are not her disabled daughters as she had previously claimed.

As a Nigerian she was probably referring to Vodun, a native African religion that has somehow managed to survive many attempts at stamping it out by colonial masters and more mainstream religious leaders. This is in contrast to the better known voodoo found in places such as Haiti or Louisiana.

Note to all benefit fraudsters: don't bring up an unspecified curse of an obscure (to the British anyway!) religion as your alibi!
